Christmas hampers ordered by o cers from
London stores such as Fortnum & Mason and
Harrods. e goods were shipped in metal
trunks or solid wooden boxes and processed
through the Home Depot – a vast wooden
shed covering several acres of Regent’s Park
which, during the war, processed over 114
million parcels intended for servicemen on
the Western Front and in other theatres of
war, including POWs.
British soldiers were not the only ones
to enjoy Port, as British Empire troops,
including New Zealanders and Australians,
usually ate the same food as the British forces.
