companies from January 1916 referring to an
army canteen order for 500 cases of Port – with
a request to supply a further 5,000 cases by the
end of that year. Indeed, such was the British
troops’ appetite for Port that when, in April
1918, shortages meant that the canteens were
not able to secure enough for the soldiers’
consumption, the army reportedly threatened
to commandeer incoming shipments in order
to secure supplies!
