he Great War (28 July 1914 – 11 November
1918) was one of the most momentous events
in world history. Although British troops
knew they were ghting for the greater
good, life in the trenches was unimaginably
tough, and many of the men who fought in
the con ict ended up making the ultimate
sacri ce. However, despite the hardships,
there were a few small comforts to li their
spirits, Port being one of them.
Most of the combatant armies dispensed
alcohol rations to their troops, both for
medicinal and spirit-boosting reasons.
e French ration was of
pinard,
a rough red
wine. e German ration also included wine,
but was made up mainly of beer and brandy
or schnapps. e daily ration dispensed to
soldiers in the British Army was of dark rum.
